What is TMJ?

“TMJ” refers to the temporomandibular joint that connects the skull to the lower jaw and facilitates the movement required for eating and speaking. The joint itself is surrounded by some of the body’s strongest muscles that move the lower jaw when you speak and chew. These muscles can become tense and strained when the TMJ is not allowed to function properly and rest in a natural, relaxed position. Muscle tension leads to the common symptoms and discomfort often associated with a temporomandibular disorder, or “TMJ”.

Dr. Hallman works with both adults and children to address TMJ and other problems related to the function of the bite, helping patients to establish a stable bite that allows the jaw joints to function naturally and without tension and discomfort.

Common causes of a bite disorder can include:

  • Malocclusion: this can include underbite, overbite and crossbite
  • Crooked teeth, crowding of teeth
  • Trauma
  • Jaw structure abnormalities
